 China: Kingdom of the Dragon

China: Kingdom of the Dragon

$14.99

In the Land of the Dragon, cities with skylines that look like backdrops to sci-fi movies coexist with millennium-old monuments. Densely populated cities contrast with the forests and brilliant lakes of Sichuan, the Himalayan peaks, and the deserts and Blue Mountains of Xinjiang. Here a kaleidoscope of perspectives opens up on life in and around nine major metropolises, from Zhenghou and its archaeological discoveries to Macao, the Las Vegas of the East. The photography captures the entire range of China’s natural, architectural, and human diversity, while the book’s narrative explores the many traditions and aspirations nurtured by the people. The result is a beautiful tableau that lets the reader discover today’s China through a choice of sumptuous itineraries.

I live in Las Vegas, NV. Some of my influences include Virginia Woolf, Kahlil Gibran, Ansel Adams, and Dorothy Parker. Their writings, photography, and paintings inspired me growing up and to this day. Being a recovered alcoholic and drug addict, I hope my words help and comfort those with similar problems. I would like to thank Shawn Mageau, Kacey Paulsen, Paul Prescott, Andreas Pelonis and my Family for all of their support.

Stages: Performances 1970-2002 (w/ Bonus DVD) (Live)

$59.98

Celebrating over 30 years in the spotlight, STAGES: PERFORMANCES 1970-2002 is the ultimate Neil Diamond live box set. There are 5 audio CDs containing 83 tracks, all but one of which are previously unreleased. Forty-two of these performances include songs that Neil Diamond has never issued in live versions before, a true boon to collectors. Among those 42 tracks are 5 numbers that Neil Diamond has never recorded or released before on any album. The sixth disc, a DVD, contains highlights (12 songs) from a 2002 concert in Dublin plus a backstage video documentary of Life On the Road. STAGES is the largest single collection of previously unreleased live material ever commercially/officially issued on one artist in pop music history. The ultra-deluxe, book-style package includes a 52-page booklet with liner notes written by Neil Diamond, comprehensive track-by-track annotations and band personnel, and more than 40 pages of previously uncirculated photography. Neil Diamond’s liner note essay entitled An Unexpected Journey, goes right back to his early days as he reflects upon his career. This is all a long way from 1966, he writes, when I played that high school gym in Tampa and stayed in a Motel 6. But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, and that is the excitement I feel about performing live. Taking the stage is as palpable and seductive for me today as it was back then. The thrill of the unknown, the new, and the unpredictable is still as inspiring and welcome to me after all these years as it was when I first took the stage and made that fool’s leap of faith. STAGES: PERFORMANCES 1970-2002 is truly extraordinary in its scope. The first two CDs, A Night In Las Vegas, 12/27/02, comprise an entire uncut Neil Diamond concert recording, from the most successful tour of his career. The next two CDs, Many Stages, comprise performances recorded between 1970 and 2001, in the United States, Canada, England,

 Women: Essays by Susan Sontag

Women: Essays by Susan Sontag

$35.69

These new photographs of women, along with the first major essay written by Sontag in ten years, focus on 150 women, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, Eudora Welty, Martina Navratilova, Jerry Hall, Jodi Foster, Rosie O’Donnell, a Navajo weaver, and others. The book is a modest coffee-table size, printed on high-quality paper, with state-of-the-art reproduction of the photographs. Short biographies of the subjects of the photographs will appear in the back, along with an index. Sontag’s 15,000-word essay will be self-contained and will not run along with the photographs. Library Journal By now, Liebovitz is famous for her many portraits of celebrities and public figures in magazines such as Vanity Fair and Vogue. Time and again she cleanly captures the story of people who are perhaps too much in the camera’s eye. Her work, however, is not limited to those seemingly commanding presences. Here many portraits of famous women (such as a heroic Toni Morrison, a perfectly authentic Martha Stewart, and a sexy Jerry Hall suckling her son Gabriel Jagger) are combined with Liebovitz’s less well known but entirely interesting portraits of obscure women. She elicits a sort of surprising honesty from these less-practiced models. The most striking include a direct glance from Morgan W. Kelly, a young, well-chalked teacher in South Bronx; a series of paired portraits of Las Vegas showgirls in costume (color) and in daily life (black-and-white); and the cleverly juxtaposed dual portrait of two gently shy, and obese, women in front of a pick-up truck followed by one of two young girls in the back of that truck displaying their Barbie dolls. Sontag’s essay on beauty and the role of photography comments on the changing status of women in America while challenging the viewer really to see this amazing array of photographs and individuals. Recommended for all photography collections.
