How far can a camera with 10X Optical zoom shoot?

I’ve been looking at cameras online and I want to know how far a camera with 3,4,8 & 10 optical zooms can shoot? And is it better to have a lot of mega pixels and a low optical zoom or low mega pixels and a lot of zoom?

Optical zoom is the difference between two focal lengths and is not the same as magnification. An example is a camera (Sanyo) with a 5X zoom using focal lengths of 5.2mm – 26mm. 26mm being the longest focal length. Another camera (Kodak) has 3X zoom using focal lengths of 35mm – 105mm. The 105mm focal length will actually get you closer (more magnification) than the 26mm focal length. So even though 10X is higher than 3X, the 3X camera will get you closer.

As fopr mega-pixels, that is the size of the image and not the quality. It is true that higher mega-pixel camera images can be cropped to compensate for zoom in some instances. However, with higher mega-pixel count (on the same sensor size) you have more noise in higher ISO (lower light) situations which results in lower quality.

In the end, you need to look at what type of shooting you plan to do and find a camera that fits. If you plan on taking images from great distances, look at the focal length, not the zoom, and find the longest one you can get. If you are looking at more landscape and portrait shots, a wider angle may be better. Any camera above 5MP will produce high quality, sharp images up to 8X10 and beyond. 7-8MP would be a good number for larger prints while keeping noise down.
